Small Hands Big Dreams Turtle Class Win the Scholastic Book Clubs’ “Care Where You Are” Sweepstakes
(Bainbridge, Ohio) – (March 12, 2010) –Pre-School students at Small Hands Big Dreams Learning Center in Bainbridge received some exciting news. This class of eager 5 year olds won a national reading contest that resulted in the opportunity to learn a valuable life lesson. This class learned about the power of giving, and now they can share their love of reading with their favorite local charities!
Ms. Kathy Hutchins and her “Turtle Class” won the “Care Where You Are” Sweepstakes, a national sweepstakes sponsored by Scholastic Book Clubs. The Grand Prize is 500 books from Scholastic to donate to the charities of their choice. After heavily weighing their options, the class decided to donate their winnings to WomenSafe, Inc. and Laura’s Home for Women and Children. To win this generous gift, the Turtle Class participated in Scholastic Book Clubs’ ClassroomsCare program – a philanthropic literacy initiative that encourages reading by asking classrooms across the country to read 100 books between August1st and December 31st. When asked why they chose these two charities, 5 year old Ava Hipp of Solon replied “sometimes kids that go there without any toys and books. If we give them some new books, then they can read them and be happy”.
Out of more than 12,000 classes that entered the sweepstakes, Ms. Hutchins’ class was one of only 200 across the nation to win the prize. ClassroomsCare is designed to empower students around the country to make a difference in the world. The program distributes more than one million books each year.
“My students and I were so excited when we found out we won this sweepstakes!” said Ms. Hutchins, the Turtle Class Teacher. “Not only is it exciting to see these young minds develop a love for reading and literacy, but to see them displaying such care and compassion for those less fortunate is truly inspiring.”
